I'm Dana Bernard, a Registered Nurse by trade and an educator by passion. I’ve been in education my whole career. I started out working as a nursing assistant when I was 12 years old and became an Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) at 19. Within a year of becoming an LVN I was handpicked to work in the education department where I did orientation of all new staff, continuing education for all of the staff and ran a nursing assistant training program. Over time I became a Registered Nurse and eventually went on to get my bachelors and masters degrees in business management.
After 23 years in hospital education I was given the opportunity to work for a vocational school. Not only do I teach, but I develop curriculum and run the operations.of the business. Today I am President of the company. One of the key factors in making the move to vocational education was the ability to make a difference in the lives of many people, like myself, who have worked their way up the career ladder.
I’ve been married for 30 years and my husband Gene has always owned his own business: landscaping and farming are his favorites. He is a very hard worker and has been super supportive of me and my career over the years. When I first became a nurse and was offered the job in education I came home and said “hey, they want me to do this job where they want me to teach people and talk all the time” I was pretty introverted at that point in my life and he said “oh you’ll do a great job, you like to talk and you’re a good teacher and you should go out and do it” ever since then he’s been nothing but supportive of everything I do and he’s really sacrificed a lot on behalf of my career over the years.
We love the outdoors and nature, Some of our favorite activities include: camping, fishing and hunting. We ride our ATV’s and we just really like being outside. I have a vegetable garden and lots of flowers at my home. I spend many hours tending our garden. I’m definitely a California girl. I love the summer and the heat. I would never make it in Minnesota or Alaska – that’s for sure!
So why did I start The Learning Oasis? I love to learn. We are a learning organization that is passionate about sharing knowledge with others. We believe that you should focus on your strengths, not your weaknesses. This will make you happier because you will be doing what you love and what you are best at doing. Because of this you will also contribute more at work and home.
The Learning Oasis is a place where women can come and learn to be more of who they already are. Someone recently told me that the thing that they liked about me most was the fact that I didn’t try to be anything different than I am. I am a woman and I don’t try to act like a man or pretend to be like a man. I conduct business like a woman and there is nothing wrong with that! I am an open and direct person. I have the ability to tell people what I think in a non-intimidating way. I think that is because I am full of heart. I am thoughtful about other people’s feelings and I think that’s the way women behave, mostly. Too many times women try to be different, they try to act like a man in a man’s world and that’s not really necessary. We need to learn to interact with men. I believe as leaders, supervisors and managers we’re better at it than men. Women tend to think about people’s feelings and what is fair and right in the workplace. This heightens employee engagement.
Supporting and interacting with my team has always been a key component to my leadership style throughout the years. I believe that if you take care of your people they’ll take care of your clients and that’s really proven out true over the years.
